Wolf black and white

the two wolves reflection

Inside each one of us there is a fight going on, a terrible fight between those two wolves and the same fight is going on inside you too. One is white and the other is black.  One is full of rage and fights against everyone incessantly.    It is anger, envy, sadness, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, feeling of inferiority, lying, false pride, superiority and ego.

In the white and New Age world the story ends like this.  Perhaps you’ve heard it before.  In the age of canned and oversimplified food and spirituality it is worth going a little further to look for the true essence.  The original native meaning is much deeper and in the Cherokee tradition the story goes on and ends like this….

But if I also recognize the qualities of the black wolf, he is happy and the white wolf is happy. We all win. Because the black wolf also has many qualities; tenacity, courage, bravery, strong determination and great strategic thinking, qualities I sometimes need that the white wolf lacks.

Think about how you should interact with those enemy forces within you. How you do so will determine your life. Instead of killing one of the wolves, choose to guide them both on the right path.

So let us not starve our fears, it is always better to recognize them, understand them and transform them. Let us not starve our anger, our spite or our sadness either. Let us approach these inner realities without cornering them in order to break them down and find out what they want to tell us.  They can give us valuable lessons to be a little better every day.

Legend has it that a Cherokee elder, wanting to pass on wisdom to his grandson, took him to a place of great beauty, to speak to him, in solitude, in this way: «In my heart live two wolves, one is white and the other is black. The white one is loving, good and gentle, he only fights when he has to take care of others or himself. The black one is violent and at any eventuality he unleashes his anger and rage, he fights for no reason, he is full of anger and hatred, he only causes trouble.»

When the grandson asked him who will win the battle, the grandfather replied: «Both, because if I only feed the white wolf, the black one will hide and attack him when I am careless. And if I pay attention only to the bad wolf, it will be stronger and will use its negative energy when it sees fit. Therefore, both wolves must live together in harmony and balance.»

Anger, rage, anger, rage… all are responses of our organism in rejection of something that bothers us, but we should not repress them, nor hide them or ignore them as if they did not exist because their accumulation would make them overflow inside us, and could make us lose control. What we must do is to understand them, to understand what is happening and to redirect those feelings.
