The domestic fowl is the world’s most widespread poultry: there are an estimated 16 billion of them worldwide. Its high meat yield and egg supply make it one of the most important domestic animals. But, as is often the case, we don’t pay attention to the animals that are so close to us. What do we really know about chickens, what is their origin, where do they come from? I’m going to tell you all about it today.
First of all, I must clarify the terminology. We speak of «hen» when referring to the females, «rooster» when referring to the males, and «chicken» when referring to the sub-adult. However, when referring to the species, Gallus gallus domesticus, I will use the term «hen» since, in poultry farming, females are much more numerous than males.
Hens are gregarious animals. Males show a hierarchy among themselves, with a dominant male showing that dominance by raising his head and tail. Females have a hierarchy of their own, separate from that of the males. There is a behavior of attacking hens that are sick.
They also do not lay during the time they are raising their chicks, especially the good mothers who are more concerned with their offspring than with other things. You have to be patient, when the chicks start to move independently, everything goes back to normal and the hens start laying again. It is normal to wait about 8 weeks after the hatching of the chicks.
